Indoor installation at Kanaal30 and Nightwalk by Expodium

Water is what we make it mensen regen water gebouwen

On 24 November 2024 Sunday, during Winterwinkelen, Gemene Grond invites you to a unique experience along the banks of the Merwedekanaal. As part of the Gemene Grond art program, you will discover personal and collective stories of the water. Through an interactive indoor installation and a special evening walk, we bring the canal's history and future to life.

What can you expect?

Indoor installation at Kanaal30 (13:00 – 16:00)

Step inside Kanaal30 and share your own stories, memories, and dreams about the canal and its surroundings. From ancient myths and legends to personal anecdotes: together we will weave the past and future of this place. Friso Wiersum invites you to explore your connection to the water through poetry, music, and visuals. How does water influence our daily lives? What does this place mean to you?

Nightwalk Merwede by Expodium (16:30 – 18:00)

After the indoor session, we will embark on a walk along the Merwedekanaal at sunset. Guided by Friso Wiersum and Bart Witte from Expodium, we will dive into the stories of the landscape: from toxic substances in the soil to the animals and plants inhabiting this area. We will connect our bodies with the natural elements to rewrite the story of the canal. During this twilight walk, you will discover new layers of the city and nature around you.

About the art project

Commissioned by Gemene Grond, artist-in-residence Merve Bedir explores the possibilities for art (applications) in shared spaces in and around Merwede. As part of this program for Winterwinkelen, Merve Bedir collects various stories that form the foundation of the art project associated with the new bridges over the Merwedekanaal. Gemene Grond is a public art program that will develop over ten years in the western part of Utrecht. Gemene Grond connects local residents and city dwellers to art projects.
