Last Friday, September 27, we had the honor of celebrating the opening of three new artworks at Lombokplein (soon to be Westplein). And yes, despite the rain—which absolutely did not dampen our spirits—we were in great company. What’s a little rain when you’re enjoying warm drinks, a delicious meal from De Voorkamer, and even better conversations?

The artists and designers gave us a unique tour of their work. For instance, Take a Detour explained their artwork Grondstof, which literally takes us 12,000 years back in time through the layers of sand. So if you’ve ever wanted to know what’s happening beneath your feet, this is your chance. How amazing is that?!

Then there was Sarah, who, with her work A Liminal Space, not only embraced nature but also allowed us to immerse ourselves in the tranquility of the moment. In combination with the other artworks, the Westplein felt friendlier and calmer, as if the art had enchanted the place.

Last but not least, Poppy Seed! Marij’s work made a huge impression—both literally and figuratively. Visitors were visibly impressed, and many were scanning to listen to the podcast stories.

The Lombok Times also received plenty of attention, with many people scanning to view all the stories and drawings now available on our website.

As if the evening wasn’t already lively enough, Amer got us off our chairs with his dabke workshop. Many people couldn’t sit still. Even passing cars joined in, honking their horns in approval—pure endorsement from the passing traffic!

Would you like to see these artworks for yourself? They are on display until at least January 1, 2025, at Westplein near Perron West. If you want to see the Grondstof tapestry by Take a Detour, make sure to visit the Stadsklooster. The drilling project can be viewed at Westplein.

Thank you Commonraad Lombok, Migrantour Utrecht, Take a Detour, Sarah Kaushik, Amer Akeel, Noor Bootsma, De Voorkamer, Perron West, Angelina Kuma, Marij Nielen, Ramiro Gomes Monteiro, Constanze Hödl.
